La Cresta Ridge and Ravine as Permanent Open Space will: 

  • Provide access to the spectacular views that are unique to this ridge—the Petaluma downtown area to the east, and Helen Putnam Regional Park to the west.
  • Connect neighborhood communities and link to the Bay Area Ridge Trail.

  • Protect important ecological resources:
  • Oak woodland
  • Seasonal springs
  • 1/3 acre of native grasses
  • Diverse bird and animal life

  • Provide recreational opportunities for adults and children

  • Offer an easily accessible “open classroom” where children from nearby schools can learn about nature in nature.

  • Provide a continuous pathway from the urban west side to Helen Putnam Park

  • Help preserve Petaluma’s rural heritage

  • Provide safe walking routes for kids going to and from school in keeping with the Safe Routes to Schools program.
